COASTAL AND SHELF SEA INTERACTIONS (1994-95)
Operational Model Developments
40 Year CSX Run
A 40-year simulation using the 35 km CSX model forced by meteorological data from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (DNMI) was completed by running years 1955-1994. Output data sets of model tide-plus-surge fields, occupying approximately 16 Gbytes of storage on POL's Convex mass store system, provide a basis for a number of studies. Extensive validation was carried out against observed surge elevations from UK and continental tide gauges. Extreme surge and water level statistics were calculated using the Generalised Extreme Value method (GEV) method from the extended model data. Comparisons between extreme and surge values at tide gauges, estimated for the same set of events from model and observations, were carried out and found to agree well in the North Sea but less well on the west coasts of England and Wales. Contributory factors such as model resolution need to be investigated.
