The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is a new, national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world. Wholly owned by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) it is the UK's leading centre for sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development and works in close partnership with partners across the UK marine science community.
The NOC provides capability to meet the needs of the whole of the country's marine research community, including Royal Research Ships, deep submersibles, advanced ocean sensors and instruments. It is also home to the global mean sea level data archive, the UK's sea level monitoring system for flood warning and climate change, the national archive of subsea sediment cores (key to the understanding of historic climate change) and the British Oceanographic Data Centre.
A vacancy has arisen within The Tide Gauge Inspectorate (TGI) which develops and maintains the UK Tide Gauge Network. The network consists of 45 monitoring stations providing high quality sea-level data for national flood defence and scientific use. A new post is required within the TGI to maintain and develop measuring systems and participate in fieldwork programmes. The post requires extensive travel throughout the UK and a full driving licence is essential.
Applicants should have a Degree or HND in electronic engineering or an equivalent qualification and be able to demonstrate relevant experience and a good understanding of electronics to component level. Knowledge of PCB CAD, programming languages and telemetry methods would be an advantage. The candidate will be required to take control of installation projects from concept through to completion and needs to be adaptable and flexible in order to meet the demands of an operational network. The candidate will be required to work unsupervised at remote locations and have a pragmatic approach to problem solving. Appropriate training will be provided where necessary.
The post is graded at Band 6, starting salary would be £26,180 - rising to £29,410 after three years.
